Comparative measurement of collagen bundle orientation by Fourier analysis and semiquantitative evaluation: reliability and agreement in Masson's tri…

2017

Summary Measurement of collagen bundle orientation in histopathological samples is a widely used and useful technique in many research and clinical scenarios. Fourier analysis is the preferred method for performing this measurement, but the most appropriate staining and microscopy technique remains unclear. Some authors advocate the use of Haematoxylin-Eosin (H&E) and confocal microscopy, but there are no studies comparing this technique with other classical collagen stainings. In our study, 46 human skin samples were collected, processed for histological analysis and stained with Masson's trichrome, Picrosirius red and H&E. Five microphotographs of the reticular dermis were taken with a 20…

Transdermal nortriptyline hydrocloride patch formulated within a chitosan matrix intended to be used for smoking cessation.

2010

The aim of this study was to prepare and characterize both physically and biopharmaceutically, a nortriptyline hydrochloride (NTP-HCl) patch formulated in chitosan.16 g of each chitosan patch formulation (I, II and III, see Table 1 ) was poured onto rectangular glass plates (64 cm²) at a height of 1 mm and dried for 24 h at room temperature. In order to characterize the chitosan patches, polarized microscopy, in vitro skin permeation studies by passive diffusion and iontophoresis and rheological and bioadhesion studies were performed.Polarized microscopy revealed the absence of aggregates and crystal forms of NTP-HCl in all transdermal patches after 30 days of storage. The rheological behav…

Sources of geomaterials in the Sicani Mountains during the Early Middle Ages: A case study of Contrada Castro, central western Sicily

2022

From 2017, an unknown rural settlement in Contrada Castro at Corleone (Palermo Province, western Sicily) was investigated as part of the `Harvesting Memories Project¿. The stratigraphic sequence, supported by radiocarbon dating, has demonstrated a reoccupation of a pre-Roman site during the transition between the Byzantine and Islamic periods. In particular, the main occupation occurred in the late 8th¿9th century when pottery kilns and a probable warehouse were constructed. During the 10th¿11th century, a new structure with different orientations replaced the previous buildings that had already collapsed. Specifically focusing on a perspective of the household production and its relationsh…

Geomaterials in green building practices: comparative characterization of commercially available clay-based plasters

2013

Three pre-mixed powdered clay-based (earthen) plasters produced in Europe and specifically designed for wall undercoating were analyzed in this paper. These materials are commercially available and successfully employed in green building practices all over the world. Their compositional and textural characteristics, as well as plastic behaviour were investigated through a multi-analytical approach: X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), polarized light microscopy (PLM), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS), scanning electron microscopy equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS), mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP), grain-size distribution (GSD) and semi-empirical tests (Atterberg…

Development and In Vitro Evaluation of Lyotropic Liquid Crystals for the Controlled Release of Dexamethasone.

2017

Made available in DSpace on 2018-12-11T17:33:26Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017-08-02 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) In this study, amphiphilic polymers were investigated as biomaterials that can control dexamethasone (DXM) release. Such materials present interfacial properties in the presence of water and an oily phase that can result in lyotropic liquid crystalline systems (LLCS). In addition, they can form colloidal nanostructures similar to those in living organisms, such as bilayers and hexagonal and cubic phases, which can be exploited to solubilize lipophilic drugs to sustain their release and enhance bioavailability. It was…

Reduction of focus size in tightly focused linearly polarized beams

2004

The electromagnetic theory predicts that when a linearly polarized collimated field is focused by a high-angle focusing system, components perpendicular to the initial polarization are generated. The use of annular masks to reduce the area of the focal spot usually increases the magnitude of this phenomenon, known as depolarization. We present a class of masks, the three-ring masks, which are important because they narrow the central lobe of the focal intensity distribution without increasing the depolarization. This can be very useful in modern optical applications, such as confocal microscopy or multiphoton scanning microscopy.

X-ray CT analyses, models and numerical simulations: a comparison with petrophysical analyses in an experimental CO2</sub&a…

2016

Abstract. An essential part of the collaborative research project H2STORE (hydrogen to store), which is funded by the German government, was a comparison of various analytical methods for characterizing reservoir sandstones from different stratigraphic units. In this context Permian, Triassic and Tertiary reservoir sandstones were analysed. Rock core materials, provided by RWE Gasspeicher GmbH (Dortmund, Germany), GDF Suez E&P Deutschland GmbH (Lingen, Germany), E.ON Gas Storage GmbH (Essen, Germany) and RAG Rohöl-Aufsuchungs Aktiengesellschaft (Vienna, Austria), were processed by different laboratory techniques; thin sections were prepared, rock fragments were crushed and cubes of …

Electrochemistry of iron oxide pigments (earths) from pictorial microsamples attached to graphite–polyester composite electrodes

2001

The electrochemical response of different iron pigments attached to graphite–polyester composite electrodes is described. Characteristic differential pulse voltammetric profiles were obtained for green earth, iron oxide red, Mars black, ochre yellow, Sienna raw, umber raw and Van Dyke brown. Proton-assisted reductive dissolution processes occur at the three-phase boundary of the substrate electrode–attached solid–electrolyte solution system. Microsamples extracted from polychromed sculptures, canvas paintings, wall paintings, altarpieces and panel paintings from Spain, Ethiopia and Italy from the 12th to the 20th centuries were electrochemically identified in agreement with polarized light …

Director orientation in chevron surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells. Verification of orientational binding at the chevron interface…

1990

Abstract We present results of theoretical modelling and experimental study of director distributions and the associated optical properties of chevron surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) cells. Chevron cells are modelled as being two stacked FLC slabs, described by distinct orientation distributions of the director [ncirc]-polarization P([ncirc] – P) couple. In each slab the [ncirc] – P distribution is governed by bulk Frank elastic and electric field-induced torques and by surface torques at the FLC-solid interface and at the chevron interface, where the two distributions are coupled. The optical properties of such structures are calculated numerically and the results t…
